FACULTY/STAFF
Kurt Cylke, professor of sociology emeritus, died on July 29, 2023. Kurt began teaching at Geneseo in the fall of 1990 and retired in January 2023. Cylke was also integral to the The Association for the Preservation of Geneseo and its efforts to restore a historic nineteenth-century, mile-long stone wall in Geneseo.
Thomas Donnan, retired adjunct lecturer of foreign languages, died on Aug. 18, 2023.
Carol Ann Harter, Geneseo’s first female president, died on Sept. 14, 2023. She served the College for six years, from 1989 to 1995, during which she sought greater diversity of students, faculty, and experiences on campus, and her vision was to create a sense of cosmopolitanism at the college with quality academic and intellectual life. Under Harter’s leadership, Geneseo enjoyed a positive brand reputation, a more research-oriented faculty, and larger annual fund donations, among other developments. During Harter’s tenure, the Small Business Center opened and the Roemer Arboretum was dedicated. In 1990, she established the Drs. Carol and Michael Harter Endowment for Faculty Mentoring award, which is given annually to a faculty member whose commitment to students’ intellectual or creative development goes beyond the classroom.
James Karl Somerville, associate professor of history emeritus, died on Oct. 2, 2023. He joined the history faculty in 1967 and retired in 1997. He and his wife, Arleen, were dedicated supporters of the The Geneseo Foundation and established the Somerville First Generation Scholarship.
